Forest of Greed is a project that I've been working on for a few months and is finally showing some signs of completion. It is my first series of strictly sculptural work. It embodies many of the same ideas as my recent photo series. After reading in the media about the climbing price of gold I became interested in this mineral turned commodity. Our worldwide obsession with gold goes way back through history but is also very current because of the presence of gold in many of our electronic devices. I also just really loved the idea of taking the beautiful form of the wood and spraying it with shiny, putrid, death-in-a-can spray paint. The shiny gold spray-paint gives the branches an other-worldly and unnatural appearance. Not knowing whether the sculptures are wood or metal creates a much-desired tension between viewer and object.

The completed series will consist of eleven individual sculptures. Four are wall mounted, four sit on the floor and three are hanging sculptures. One of the pieces, noticably different from the others, is two sections of log with a hatchet embedded in the wood. When viewed together in one room the sculptures create a forest of golden branches.
